WEST FARGO, N.D. - After the long cool spring, mosquitoes in North Dakota are trying to make up for lost time as the Fourth of July approaches.

Plenty of mosquitoes will be looking for a holiday meal, said Ben Prather, director of Cass County Vector Control, thanks to healthy rains that crossed parts of the state in recent weeks.

"And, of course, some pretty catastrophic river flooding in other areas that are going to increase significantly the mosquito population," he said. "So, I would say over the next month at least, we're going to see heightened biting pressure."

About three dozen mosquito species live in North Dakota.

For the best results with mosquito repellents, Prather advised sticking with DEET and shying away from the various "home-remedy" options.

"There are a few out there that show some fruit," he said, "but definitely go with the products that are registered. Your DEETs, lemon of oil eucalyptus is a more natural-style product that is now registered as an EPA repellent. Picaridin is an active ingredient in some of the more 'natural' kinds of repellents."

Prather also suggested wearing light-colored, loose and long-sleeved clothing to help keep the bites down.
