HELENA, Mont. - Protection from identity theft and help with putting food on the table are two goals today in Montana for the National Day of Service.
AARP Montana is holding "shred and feed" events around the state, offering free document shredding while collecting food donations.
"It's really important because there are a fair number of older Montanans who really are at risk for hunger," said AARP Montana state president Joy Bruck, "and also everyone needs to be really careful about fraud."
Last year's Day of Service also focused on fraud prevention, and in Helena more than four tons of sensitive materials were shredded.
Bruck said concerns about hunger are being heard more frequently.
"Many people, particularly those that are on Social Security or people with disabilities, sometimes, that's it," she said. "That's all they've got."
Events run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Billings, Bozeman, Butte, Great Falls, Helena and Missoula.
