LAS VEGAS – This month is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an effort to promote early detection and prevention for a disease that killed more than 39,000 American women in 2012.

Cari Herington, executive director of the Nevada Cancer Coalition, says early detection is key.

She says women should have regular mammograms starting at age 40, and those in their twenties and thirties should have clinical breast exams at least once every three years.

"But all women should be aware of their breasts and do regular self-exams, so they know of any changes that they can note,” she adds. “Because. of course, the earlier you detect something, the better off your chances are of fighting and/or curing it."

Herington says Susan G. Komen for the Cure, and other organizations are hosting events throughout October in Nevada, in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Katherine Row, media relations manager with the American Cancer Society, says breast cancer diagnosis and treatment have advanced significantly in the past generation, but the battle is far from over.

"Until breast cancer can be eradicated as a life-threatening disease, there will always be more to do,” she says. “And the Cancer Society is actually in the business of putting ourselves out of business."

The American Cancer Society reports that an estimated 227,000 American women were diagnosed with breast cancer in 2012. More than 2,000 men were diagnosed with the disease last year.
