LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Can you spare a cow?

It's a question being asked of farm folks around the country, including Arkansas, as part of an effort to get quality animals to beginning and small ranch operations in South Dakota hit by winter storm Atlas.

Montana rancher Ty Linger founded Heifers for South Dakota, after 100,000 animals were lost in the storm there.

A loss of that magnitude means replacements are scarce.

"There will be very, very few cattle within the affected area for sale,” Linger explains. “These folks are going to be going a couple hundred miles at least to find quality cattle that they can use to replenish their herds."

For those not in a position to donate breeding stock, Linger says monetary donations also help to cover the expense of transporting animals to those who need them most.

Linger says animal donations should be the type of animal you are proud to own – high quality is key.

"Most of all of us have had the best year we've ever had this year,” Linger says. “Let's reach out to our neighbors. Let's extend love, and encouragement and hope."

Volunteers are available to coordinate animal transportation, and all donations are tax deductible.
