MO Heart Gallery: Finding Forever Families for Foster Children

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – The hundreds of Missouri children in foster care who are waiting to be adopted are not statistics – they have names and faces, and their advocates hope families across the state will learn more about them online, during National Adoption Month.

The childrens’ photos are on a special website, the Missouri Heart Gallery.

Joanne Shelton, Missouri director for The Adoption Exchange, hopes families will take a moment to check out the site and realize how much they have to offer these children.

"They have suffered abuse and neglect, but then too, are just like any children,” Shelton says. “And they just need families to love them, to provide for them a safe and trusting environment."

Shelton adds that more than 1,400 Missouri children are in the foster care system, waiting for their forever families.

In addition to the online photos, a traveling version of the gallery can be viewed at several special events throughout the state this month. The events are listed on the Heart Gallery's website.

Shelton says seeing the children's faces often makes all the difference.

"They might be in foster homes that provide everything that they want,” she says. “But they're looking for that one final piece, which is a family who's going to adopt them and make them a part of their family forever. "

Since the Missouri Heart Gallery opened earlier this year, it has already helped connect 20 children with adoptive families.
