RENO, Nev. – A well-known Democratic state lawmaker who passed away in October at age 59 will be remembered at a public memorial service in Reno this weekend.

Peggy Pierce died after a long battle with cancer. She is remembered by her longtime companion, Jon Sasser, as a passionate advocate for working-class Americans. Pierce's passion also was evident in her decade-long battle with cancer, said Sasser.

"She showed amazing courage and determination in the face of that disease, and I'll certainly miss her all the rest of my life," he said.

Sasser called Pierce an "unabashed liberal" and a longtime critic of Nevada's small government.

"She was sort of the conscience of the Democratic Caucus," he explained. "When people would start drifting and forget about the rock-bottom principles – about why they were Democrats – she would be the one to remind them and sort of get them back on track when she could."

Pierce served six terms as District 3 Assemblywoman in the Nevada State Legislature.

As director of Programs, Advocacy and Government Affairs with the March of Dimes Nevada Chapter, Michelle Gorelow worked closely with Pierce on several legislative issues. She reflected on the huge influence Pierce had in her life.

"She was just such an inspiration and a wonderful mentor," said Gorelow. "I loved working with her; adored her more than she knew."

The public memorial for Peggy Pierce is scheduled to start Sat., Nov. 16, at 3:00 p.m. at the McKinley Arts and Culture Center, 925 Riverside Dr, Reno. Another memorial service was held in Las Vegas last month.

In Pierce's honor, the March of Dimes Nevada Chapter will present the first Peggy Pierce Advocacy Award to Nevada state Sen. Justin Jones early next year, at the organization's Nurse of the Year event.
