Long Holiday Weekends – Prime Time for a Check on Older Relatives

NEW YORK – Many New Yorkers will be seeing their older relatives this weekend, or during the coming holidays, and advocates for seniors say it's a prime time to really check on them, and see how they're doing if they're living independently.

Dave Irwin, senior director of communications with AARP-New York, says older relatives may not always say they're having a tough time, so holidays give family members a chance to both observe and talk.

"Check on them to see how they're doing with their health, are they taking their medications on time?” Irwin says. “Their finances as well – are the bills piling up? Are debt collectors calling?"

Irwin points out that solutions to pressing problems can be as simple as getting an older relative a pill planning box so he or she knows what medications to take each day.

The important thing is to get the conversation started, he says, keeping in mind that older family members value their independence as much as anyone else.

Irwin adds some may need a simple trip to the pharmacy or hardware store, where home improvement items such as safety rails are available, to help them maintain their independence and keep living in their own homes.

"It's also a key time to really look at their mobility and how they are aging in their home,” he explains. “You know, are they having troubling getting up and down the stairs? Are they able to get in and out of the bathroom OK on their own? "

Irwin admits these conversations aren't always easy – if they were, older relatives would simply say they need help. Sometimes, it takes a bit careful watching and listening.

If you are wondering how to get started, he says there are tips on the AARP New York website.

"To help people,” he says, “one – have these conversations, two – know what to look for and three – quite frankly, what to do about it. "
