Sandy Hook Anniversary Reminds Parents to Check In on Teen's Mental Health

BOULDER, Colo. - This Saturday marks the one-year anniversary of the Sandy Hook shooting that took the lives of 20 young children and six adults at the Connecticut elementary school. Weeks ago, investigators announced they still have no motive for the shooting, which appeared to be premeditated.

While incidents such as the Sandy Hook shooting - and the July 2012 Aurora movie theater shooting - represent extreme circumstances, parents usually have a sign that something isn't quite right before their child acts out, according to Beverly Kingston, director of the Center for the Study and Prevention of Violence, University of Colorado-Boulder.

"There's something going on. These situations are very rare, but typically in those kinds of situations, there's a pattern going on. It doesn't just happen overnight," Kingston said.

Violent teen behavior also is affecting educators, according to a recently released survey from the American Psychological Association (APA). Researchers found that 7 percent of teachers reported being threatened by a student and 4 percent said they'd been physically attacked. To determine whether your child's behavior is a result of the "terrible teens" or something more serious, experts recommend asking yourself how often the behavior occurs and whether it affects your child's ability to function or is interfering with others.

Kingston said while societal factors can come into play, children also react to the demeanor of their parents.

"Sometimes when parents get so stressed out that they stop their normal healthy parenting practices, the stress can really impact kids," Kingston explained.

Other than working to relieve your own stress during the holidays, Kingston also recommends taking a minute to reflect on your interactions with your children, and reminding them of their security and well being. When in doubt, she said, consult an expert.

The APA report is available at www.apa.org.
