SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Illinoisans will be joining others across the nation Saturday to remember America's military members and veterans during the holidays.

As part of Wreaths Across America, ceremonies will be held at more than two dozen cemeteries in Illinois simultaneously with events in other states.

Gale Red, adjutant of the Lt. George E. Dixon Camp of the Sons of Confederate Veterans in Belleville, Illinois, will be at the North Confederate Cemetery, where he and others will lay wreaths on the graves.

"It's a united thought to bring the people of the country to an awareness and appreciation of those who died for us in all the different wars that we have had as a country," Red says.

Wreaths Across America began 20 years ago at Arlington National Cemetery with the annual placement of wreaths donated by a wreath company.

The goal this year is to place 500,000 wreaths on veterans' graves nationwide and overseas.

Red says American service men and women sacrifice their time and safety every single day of the year, and the holidays are an important time to express appreciation.

"This is something that we do with Memorial Day, we do with Veterans Day,” he points out. “But those times get a lot more attention and we really need to remember our veterans throughout the year."

Veterans, families of military members and volunteers with heritage and faith communities will take part in Saturday's events.
