Wreaths Honor Ohio Veterans During the Holidays

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohioans are honoring those who serve America this holiday season, one wreath at a time.

Veterans, military families, community leaders and other volunteers will participate in ceremonies Saturday across Ohio as part of Wreaths Across America.

Lt. James Culwell, assistant public affairs officer with the Columbus Senior Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol, says the project remembers those who have lost their lives fighting for our freedom, and those who are currently serving.

"We place wreaths at headstones, and this will take place on December 14th at noon,” he explains. “And that coincides with wreath-laying ceremonies at Arlington cemetery in Washington and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier."

Culwell will participate in the event at the Camp Chase Confederate Cemetery in Columbus, but there are dozens of ceremonies scheduled throughout the state.

The goal this year is to place 500,000 wreaths on veterans' graves nationwide and overseas.

While there is Veterans Day in the fall, and Memorial Day in the spring, Culwell says U.S. service men and women sacrifice their time and safety every single day of the year, and the holidays are an important time to express appreciation.

"As our public national affairs officer Lt. Col. Merritt said, ‘Now because of that we are able to speak freely and go as we please. We must never stop thanking the veterans. They must never be forgotten.’

“So that's why we come together just for a brief moment and try to remember their sacrifices.’"

Wreaths Across America began 20 years ago at Arlington National Cemetery with the annual placement of wreaths donated by a wreath company.
