Frac Sand Mining: Profits Now Versus Future Prosperity?

WINONA, Minn. - With the oil fracking boom still spreading across the country, the pressure continues to build on areas of Minnesota that are rich in sands needed for the process, and that has many residents saying "not so fast." In southeastern Minnesota, there's currently a moratorium in place in Houston County - and rightfully so, according to resident Marilyn Frauenkron Bayer. She said the region's tourism industry would crumble right along with the river bluffs.

"Just take and visualize, if you would, having those bluff caps removed and bulldozed to the side. And then have them take out the layers of the Jordan Sandstone and then use their bulldozers to 'put the hills back together again and just leave them a little shorter than they were before,'" Bayer said.

Those who support the development of frac sand mining have said it is an issue of property rights, adding that frac sands will bring jobs, as well as a boost to the local economy.

Bayer pointed to research into Midwest communities with frac sand mining that has found that the actual jobs and economic impact often do not line up with industry promises.

"In the long term, the health and well-being of mining areas has decreased. And when it comes to jobs, most of those areas are worse off in the long term," she said.

The issue will be dissected further this Saturday at the Land Stewardship Project's first-ever Citizens' Frac Sand Summit at the Tau Center, Winona. Summit details are available at http://landstewardshipproject.org.
