Michigan Dentists Aim to Help More Children Smile

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - February is National Children's Dental Health Month, but for many Michigan children there isn't much to smile about when it comes to their oral health.

Every day, some children miss out on school, social opportunities and even proper nutrition because of preventable dental issues, said Dr. Norm Palm, an oral surgeon and president of the Michigan Dental Association.

"Twenty-five percent probably have some degree of active dental decay," he said, "and over 50 percent have experienced some dental disease, most frequently again being dental decay or dental caries."

Palm said he's encouraged by Gov. Rick Snyder's support of Michigan's "Healthy Kids Dental" program, a public-private partnership which allows Medicaid-eligible children to be seen in any participating dental office. The program has expanded steadily and soon will reach all but three of Michigan's counties.

Reaching children about the importance of dental health also means reaching their parents, Palm said. The recommendation to bring kids in to the dentist by age 1 isn't just to check their emerging baby teeth, he said; it also gives the dentist the chance to evaluate the parents.

"If you find that that parent, or that individual, hasn't been very good about their own dental care," he said, "then you have an opportunity that you know that you want to try to track that child more closely."

The "Points of Light" project helps connect families with what Palm called a "dental home"- a place where they can receive coordinated and comprehensive dental care beginning in infancy.
