RENO, Nev. – A new program from NV Energy offering discounted LED light bulbs could save Nevadans millions of dollars in energy costs.

Adam Grant, energy-efficiency program manager at NV Energy, says the utility is offering discounts of up to 50 percent on the bulbs purchased at Home Depot, Costco and other major retailers.

He says the Light Emitting Diode, or LED technology, has reached a level of efficiency and price that most people can afford the light bulbs.

"These bulbs last about 20 times longer than your normal incandescent bulb,” Grant says. “Through the life of the bulb, this LED bulb, you'll save about $135 in energy charges over the life of the bulb."

Grant adds customers can expect to pay in the $5 to $7 range for a discounted LED bulb, which will be marked with a tag reading Simple Savings.

He says the same bulbs a few short years ago retailed at up to $40.

Grant explains that LED bulbs were previously used for special lighting purposes, but can now fit in any light socket in the house.

"They're 360, they're general service,” he points out. “You can put them in your desk lamp. You can put them in the lamp next to your bed and it works exactly the same."

Grant stresses that the $135 in energy savings per bulb can be realized for each bulb used in the house. He says some homes have up to 50 light sockets.
