SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - It's down to the wire for those who still need to sign up for health coverage under the Affordable Care Act. There's just one week remaining to enroll for 2014 and avoid penalties under the individual mandate. According to the associate state director of AARP in Illinois, Courtney Hedderman, there are plenty of options available for all Illinoisans.

"People have to have health insurance, and there are a multitude of plans that are being offered, so there is choice in the marketplace to have the best option that is affordable to them, as well as the coverage that they would need," she said.

Hedderman said the website for signing up, GetCoveredIllinois.gov is the best place to start and get basic questions answered. Those who do not sign up by the March 31 deadline will have to wait until November to enroll for next year.

Hedderman also noted that many people who are currently uninsured can qualify for federal subsidies, and said there are resources to help people who need assistance, including the AARP website at AARP.org. Also across the state, there are some 1500 trained "navigators" who can answer questions and help Illinois residents select a plan.

"If people have questions, they can go to those trusted sources and seek the help that they need and ultimately get coverage and start utilizing their health care coverage to stay healthy and help themselves and their families," Hedderman stated.

The marketplace in Illinois is now a state and federal partnership. Hedderman said efforts continue to move to a state-based exchange, which she says would be better because it could be tailored to Illinois.

"How we receive care, our delivery of care here, is different than it is in another location, so just having our own state-based exchange gives us that local control."

An estimated 113,000 people have purchased plans through the Illinois Health Insurance Marketplace and an additional 210,000 have enrolled in expanded Medicaid under the ACA.
