RENO, Nev. – Nevadans living through one of the worst droughts on record can get some helpful information on a new website from the University of Nevada-Reno.

Mark Walker, dean of the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, says the Living with Drought website has information on irrigating crops, gardening and recreation.

"We identified as many groups of people as we could think of that would suffer some effect from the drought,” he explains. “People who might be in lawn and garden maintenance, people who might be interested in recreation, people who might be interested in fire potential."

The U.S. Department of Agriculture recently designated nine counties in Nevada as primary natural disaster areas because of the drought.

It goes without saying that the drought is hurting farmers, but Walker says the ongoing water shortage could lead to water restrictions for everyone.

He advises making choices about what part of your lawn and garden has the most value.

"Prioritizing the plants you want to keep and also identifying the areas that, if you let them go, it's going to be a significant expense to bring them back later," he adds.
