ALBUQUERQUE – The consumer advocacy group Health Action New Mexico is asking members of the public who signed up for health coverage through the Affordable Care Act (ACA) to share their experiences. Barbara Webber, executive director, Health Action New Mexico, says her organization is helping collect the data for the New Mexico Health Insurance Exchange.

"It's also an opportunity for consumers to engage more in their local community," says Webber. "To start talking about, what are local health issues – obviously getting people enrolled and how they're enrolled, and what are the problems with enrollment?"

Webber says her group is seeking feedback beyond the overwhelming technical issues that plagued the healthcare.gov website when it launched last October. She thinks it will be helpful to know more about the client experience with insurance companies and medical providers.

Despite the technical challenges, Webber points out that 35,000 New Mexicans enrolled in ACA health coverage during the first open-enrollment period that started Oct. 1, 2013 and ended Mar. 31, 2014. She predicts the groundwork being laid now should help improve future enrollment.

"We want to have a much more robust second enrollment period, and want to understand what we need to contribute to make that happen," explains Webber.

The next ACA open-enrollment period is scheduled to start on Nov. 15, 2014, and end Feb. 15, 2015. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services reports that more than 8 million Americans have signed up for health insurance available through the ACA.

In New Mexico, comments about people's ACA experiences are being taken by email, at enrollmentfeedback@healthactionnm.org.
