International Tourism Plan Welcomed in VA

RICHMOND, Va. – Make it easier for foreign vacationers at international airports, and the boost in tourism is a direct cash import. That's the premise behind a new plan from President Obama.

Diane Beschamps, president and CEO, Virginia Tourism Corporation, says the state is already a popular destination thanks to its Washington, D. C., connections. She says most vacationers come from the United Kingdom, Germany, France and Brazil – and first, they want to visit all the places they've seen on television.

"And then, they come into Virginia and they visit the wineries, they take in the history, they take in the beaches and also the Shenandoah Valley and the Blue Ridge Mountains," says Beschamps.

Fort Monroe is another top destination. It was the first national monument President Obama named. The state sees more than 350,000 international visitors a year, who spend at least $425 million. Beschamps notes that foreign visitors have more vacation time than Americans, and will stay for two to three weeks.

Beschamps says the President has been supportive of boosting international tourism since he took office, by shepherding a $10 country-entry charge to pay for tourism outreach in other countries. The new new plan includes shorter waiting periods for visas and shorter lines at passport and visa checks.

"Virginia is in a great spot and has been always for international visitors. Overseas, every single year, we're drawing record numbers in spending with visitors," she says.

She adds 400 flights from 48 foreign cities land each week at Washington-Dulles International Airport.
