ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - New patients in New Mexico wait 46 days on average for their first primary-care visit at a Veterans Administration medical facility, according to a report from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

The audit of hundreds of VA hospitals and clinics also found that new patients seeking specialty care wait 57 days on average, and for those seeking mental health care the average wait is 38 days.

Elizabeth Charles, a member of Women Veterans of New Mexico, said she has experienced years of long waits for treatment of a disability, and what she described as insufficient care at the VA hospital in Albuquerque.

"I want to force the system to change," she said. "If you're going to put me in harm's way, then you'd better take care of me when I come home."

The audit follows a report from the VA's Office of Inspector General linking abnormalities in reporting patient wait times to employee bonuses. A sample group of 226 veterans waited an average of 115 days for their first primary care appointments at Phoenix-area clinics. According to the report, VA executives in Phoenix reported a 24-day average waiting period for those veterans.

Mike Schramski, chairman of the New Mexico Veterans Business Expo and Job Fair, said he too has experienced long waits for treatment at the VA in Albuquerque.

"My experience with the VA locally has been wonderful," he said, "other than it does take a while to get an appointment and to see someone."

The VA's challenges led to the recent resignation of Veterans Administration Secretary Eric Shinseki.

U.S. Sen. Tom Udall, D-N.M., who is supporting the Restoring Veterans' Trust Act of 2014, said the bill would help shorten wait times by enabling veterans to seek care at other than VA-run facilities in some cases.

The VA report is online at va.gov. Information on the Restoring Veterans Trusst Act is at tomudall.senate.gov.
