Hands-Only CPR a Proven Life-Saver

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - Hands-only cardiopulmonary resuscitation is being taught as a potential lifesaver, and efforts are under way to expand that training to all South Dakota schools.

Pamela Miller, grassroots advocacy director for the American Heart Association of South Dakota, said her organization sees this as a critical skill for young people.

"Everyone should know how to do hands-only CPR," she said. "Anyone 12 years and older can do it, and we really encourage kids to learn this skill - because if they're going to end up using it, it's going to be on someone that they know. In the home, could be a parent, could be a grandparent."

Miller said the Heart Association is working with school districts and state lawmakers on a plan to require the training in every school. Research has shown that hands-only CPR, which involves only chest compression, can be just as effective as "rescue breathing" into someone's mouth - and doesn't have the disease-transmission potential that keeps some people from performing traditional CPR.

While she knew how important the training was, Miller described a recent, first-hand lesson.

"My father had a sudden cardiac arrest," she said. "A bystander - she happened to be an off duty EMT, but she was right there - knew what to do. She gave him about three minutes of hands-only CPR and saved his life. It's really re-energized me, in terms of talking to people about hands-only CPR. It's a life-saving skill."

Some schools are including hands-only CPR as part of their health classes, but Miller said more could make it a priority.

"A lot of schools are already teaching the skill to their students, but it's not a requirement, so a P.E. teacher or a superintendent could decide they don't have time for it anymore," she said. "So, we want to get it inserted into a curriculum requirement, so that all kids - 11,000 of them in South Dakota - have to learn hands-only CPR every year."
