DES MOINES, Iowa - The buzz continues over President Obama's newly announced proposal to make two years of publicly-funded community college available to students around the country, including Iowa. Besides lessening the financial blow of higher education costs, Des Moines Area Community College President Rob Denson thinks the plan would go a long way in addressing the shortage of skilled workers.

"We have very good jobs, welding, truck-driving, and nursing, that are available without enough qualified applicants for those positions," says Denson. "The devil is always in the details, but anything that begins this discussion is good."

According to the White House, the plan would cost the federal government an estimated $60 billion over 10 years, but it's unclear how it would be funded. Some Republicans are criticizing the lack of details, but the president is expected to provide some of them in his State of the Union address on January 20.

Many factors go into the overall price of higher education, including tuition, books, housing and transportation. Denson says anything that can address a larger portion of the cost will help students earn degrees without as much debt.

"Over $1.2 trillion in student debt right now, which is more than all credit card debt combined," Denson says. "It's a big number, and anything we can do to help these students helps business, helps the country."

The White House says the federal government could cover the majority of the program's cost, leaving 25 percent to come from states that opt into it. Denson says he expects support from Iowa's leaders, who also enacted the Workforce Training and Economic Development Fund.

"They gave the community colleges of Iowa an extra $15 million to work on adult basic education, English as a Second Language, and in targeted areas, providing support for short-term training programs," he says.

At Des Moines Area Community College alone, Denson says that has helped more than 2,000 students a year get into short-term or regular-credit programs in the two years since the fund was launched.
