Child Abuse Prevention Expert: "Psychological Teflon" Protects Families

BOISE, Idaho - Child abuse and neglect prevention, and healing for the abused are the focus of the Strengthening Families Training Institute, which gets underway Tuesday at the Boise Hotel and Conference Center for two days of sharing tools to protect children and families.

Pat Stanislaski, director of Partnering for Prevention, is one of the keynote speakers. She'll share tips on building resilience, which she describes as "psychological Teflon." It's something that people often discover they already have when they experience trauma or severe emotional stress.

"At the end they find they've gotten through it because they came up with this amazing ability to be resilient that they didn't know they have," she says. "Another thing that seems to happen is they see new possibilities in their lives."

Stanislaski says resilience can mitigate the impact of abuse, and that it's important for parents and caregivers to be resilient to diminish the likelihood of abuse and neglect in the first place. The Strengthening Families Training Institute is sponsored by the Idaho Children's Trust Fund.

Stanislaski says research shows there is a gene associated with resilience, giving some people a natural tendency to it. But she believes resiliency can also be taught, and it's important to understand some of the myths about resilient people. For example, she points to a belief that resilient people "do it all by themselves."

"The most resilient people are the people who really surround themselves with family and friends and other support systems," she says. "They talk to people and they ask for help when they need it."

The conference will also focus on new tools to prevent child sexual abuse, shaken baby syndrome prevention and child brain development.
