CHARLESTON, W. Va. - West Virginians are returning to work after a whale of a winter storm over the weekend. Officials say a lot of the snow from Jonah has been cleared.

Larry Messina, assistant secretary with the state Department of Military Affairs and Public Safety, says it looks like the primary roads are "passable" and crews are working on the secondary roads. He says commuters should still watch the weather and pay attention to any warnings from local officials and be patient.

"In areas where there are still snow-covered secondary roads, or even if there seem to be issues with the primary roads," says Messina. "Folks remain patient and give the road crews a chance to clear those roadways."

He warns that the roads still may freeze overnight. Current road conditions can always be found at wv511.org.

A major snarl on I-77 in Charleston is no longer a problem. As many as 200 vehicles had been stranded in the bottleneck, but C.W. Sigman, deputy director with the Kanawha County Office of Emergency Management, says that was cleared Saturday. He says despite problems there and on Interstates 64 and 79, there have been no reports of deaths or serious injuries.

"I am very proud of Kanawha County," says Sigman. "The citizens have reacted great. We have not had any fatalities I'm aware of. They had provisions. They stayed off the road. It's been a very uneventful event."

The heaviest snowfalls were in the eastern panhandle and eastern mountains, which, in places, were the highest snow totals anywhere in the country. But Messina notes there were very few power outages.

"Thankfully, the snow was not the wet, heavy kind that forecasters thought it might be, and so, we really haven't had very many issues when it comes to power outages," says Messina. "And that's made a crucial difference, keeping people safe and warm."

Messina adds there also have been no serious injuries reported to his agency, from anywhere in the state.
