RENO, Nev. - A 2-month-old black lab puppy named Donner at a shelter in Reno needs a complex, expensive surgery to survive, so the Nevada Humane Society is asking for donations to cover the cost.

Donner was born with a condition called mega-esophagus, which is caused by a birth defect.

Kimberly Wade, senior manager of communications and events at the Humane Society, says someone brought him in a few weeks ago.

"He was found in a litter of puppies and he was the only one that was not able to eat," says Wade. "He seemed to be struggling. So the person that found him brought him to us. Luckily for Donner, he is now in our care and he will get the surgery he needs to live that long, healthy life."

You can follow Donner's journey and get information on donating on the Humane Society of Nevada's Facebook page.

Wade says Donner recently got approval from specialized veterinarians at UC Davis to get the surgery.

"It is going to be several thousand dollars, and that doesn't even initially include his stay at the hospital, travel expenses, consultation, recovery, etcetera," says Wade.

Once Donner has the surgery and recovers, he will be available for adoption.
