Will an RNC Revolt Go Down in Ohio?

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Ohio is known as a presidential battleground state, and it could also become the location of a major political showdown.

The Republican National Convention in Cleveland is just a couple of weeks away, and there's talk that some opponents of presumptive nominee Donald Trump are pushing a plan to unbind delegates, allowing them to vote for the candidate of their choosing.

However, Christopher Devine, an assistant professor of political science at the University of Dayton, said he doesn't expect any revolt attempts to block the nomination.

"There's often talk about this kind of thing but we don't usually see it materialize," he said, "Election to election, 90 percent party support is the norm and we may fall a little short of that this year for Trump, but probably not far short of that."

Based on recent polling, Devine said, it appears the GOP is just about as unified as it normally is heading into the general election. Meanwhile, according to a CNN analysis, Trump currently lacks a simple majority of total delegates needed to squelch attempts to block his nomination.

Trump has clashed with Republicans on some political policies, including immigration, trade and gun violence. Devine noted that it has created some complications for the Ohio Republican Party.

"We have (Gov.) John Kasich still withholding his support and others like Dave Yost, our state auditor, who have been vocal in voicing opposition to him as well," Devine said. "I think that will be one of the lesser stories, but still a very interesting one, is to see how the welcoming party here is going to respond to what is a pretty awkward situation for many of them."

Cuyahoga County has gone to Democratic presidential candidates in the past several elections, and Devine said he doesn't anticipate that to change this year, despite the RNC being held in Cleveland.

"When you think about the logic of voting," he said, "when you get to November, how many people are going to have cared that the party nominee was nominated in their state or even their city? That doesn't seem like a really good reason to vote for someone for president."

The Republican convention runs July 18-21. The 2016 Democratic National Convention follows July 25-28 in Philadelphia.
