Los Cuidadores de la Salud en el Hogar del Estado de Washington negociaron un aumento

OLYMPIA, Wash. – Los proveedores de cuidados de la salud a domicilio contratados por el Estado de Washington han recorrido un largo camino para llegar a donde están ahora.

En las negociaciones contractuales recientes, el estado accedió al mayor aumento de salario otorgado hasta ahora a estos trabajadores: al terminar su contrato en 2019, su sueldo promedio habrá alcanzado los 16 dólares por hora.

Melissa Ringer, proveedora individual de cuidados a domicilio en el Estado de Washington, perteneciente a la Unión Internacional de Empleados de Servicio Healthcare 775 y parte del equipo negociador, dice que el nuevo contrato legitima su profesión de una manera que nunca antes había visto.

“Es un campo respetable. Es algo que ya no me molesta ni me avergüenza, decir que lo hago, porque sentía que nos consideraban niñeras glorificadas. Estos triunfos pueden ayudar a que los cuidadores produzcan mejores cuidadores.”

Los cuidadores contratados por el estado representados en este acuerdo trabajan con pacientes mayores, niños con discapacidades e incluso hay padres que brindan atención a sus hijos adultos. Ringer dice que ahora toca ver a la Legislatura de Washington para asegurarse de que el contrato esté fondeado para 2017.

El contrato también incluye un aumento para el tiempo libre pagado, duplicar el fondeo estatal de retiro y un aumento de 50 centavos por hora para los cuidadores que tomen cierto entrenamiento avanzado.

Ringer opina que, como la edad promedio de la población de Washington crece rápidamente, los políticos están cambiando su manera de ver a los proveedores de cuidados en el hogar.

“Los Baby Boomers están madurando y muchos de los políticos están viendo que este mundo real también está sucediendo en sus familias. Los parientes necesitan ser cuidados y nosotros queremos que a tu casa vayan cuidadores buenos, de calidad, y este contrato nos ayuda a producirlos.”

La Unión SEIU Healthcare 775 representa aproximadamente a 34 mil cuidadores individuales en Washington.
