Encuesta: Condado de Taos apoya protecciones silvestres en área de Pecos

TAOS, N.M. -- Una sólida mayoría de habitantes del Condado de Taos está a favor de la idea de agregar nuevas protecciones a las tierras que rodean el área silvestre de Pecos (Pecos Wilderness), según revela un estudio reciente encargado por “The Wilderness Society” (La Sociedad Silvestre).

El 95 por ciento de los entrevistados afirmó que las tierras públicas son importantes para su calidad de vida y que debieran preservarse para el disfrute de las futuras generaciones.

Michael Casaus, Director Regional de “The Wilderness Society” en Nuevo México, comenta que el asunto de la protección de tierras públicas une a la población y tiende puentes por encima de la brecha partidista.

“Estando el país tan dividido políticamente, creo que esta encuesta muestra que las tierras públicas y la vida silvestre son lo que realmente acerca a los votantes del Condado de Taos.”

El estudio encontró también que casi el 80 por ciento de los residentes han usado tierras públicas para acampar, pescar, andar a caballo, en bicicleta o para cazar en los últimos tres años.

Mark Allison, Director Ejecutivo de la Alianza Silvestre de Nuevo México, dice también que el estudio encontró que la mayoría de la gente quiere conservar las tierras federales en manos federales.

“Están de veras preocupados con los esfuerzos por aprovechar esas tierras públicas para pasarlas a los estados o privatizarlas. También muestra amplio apoyo a los esfuerzos por proteger las áreas salvajes que hay en Pecos.”

Varios grupos conservacionistas han trabajado desde 2009 en armar una coalición con grupos de negocios, académicos y deportivos en los cinco condados que rodean el campo silvestre de Pecos, para apoyar que haya más protecciones.

Por su parte Steve Pearce, Congresista por Nuevo México, copatrocinó la legislación para transferir las tierras públicas a los estados y propuso vender tierra pública para pagar el déficit nacional –ideas que refutaron los Senadores Martin Heinrich y Tom Urdall.
