Maryland in Top Ten for Energy-Efficient States

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Maryland continues to make strides in finding ways to conserve energy.

It ranks ninth in the nation on a new scorecard by the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy.

Report author Westin Berg says Maryland offers a variety of incentive programs to encourage business and homeowners to save electricity – and the state also leads by example.

Maryland requires energy-efficient public buildings, compares energy use to previous years and encourages the use of energy-savings performance contracts.

Berg says as long as that continues, Maryland will do well.

"Funding for these programs in the future might be uncertain,” he states. “Maryland will need to grow and support its Empower Efficiency Programs.

“In all other areas the state needs to show really strong performance, especially in their building energy consumption and by enabling cost-effective and efficient combined heat and power systems."

Berg says another strong point for Maryland is the state's two research centers that focus on energy efficiency.

And the report praises Maryland for being one of the few states to set energy-efficiency standards for appliances.

Maryland also scored high for the state-led Smart Energy Communities Program. Berg says states that perform well on the report card have innovative programs to encourage conservation.

"They're pursuing sustainable transportation policies, have high electric vehicle registration rates and have promoted reductions in vehicle miles traveled,” he explains. “And most of the states that are doing very well are keeping up on their building energy codes."

Berg says coastal states tend to score the highest on his group's annual report card, with California and Massachusetts taking the top slots this year.

Vermont was third, Rhode Island fourth and Connecticut and New York tied for fifth in the rankings.
