Finding Common Ground for Saving the Environment

HARRISBURG, Pa. – With big changes on the way in Washington, D.C., environmental groups are saying conservation should not be a partisan issue. The new administration has already outlined some possible radical shifts in federal environmental policies.

Collin O'Mara, president and CEO of the National Wildlife Federation, noted that environmental laws, such as the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act and the Endangered Species Act, are not at odds with economic growth.

"Americans have seen health outcomes go up at the same time we've seen the GDP go up," he said. "We've proven we can have a strong environment and a healthy economy at the same time."

He added that natural-resource issues are neither Republican nor Democratic but American issues, and dealing with them cooperatively may be a start to healing some of the nation's political conflicts.

Grant La Rouche, NWF regional representative, says on a federal level, projects like the Delaware River Basin Conservation Act show that saving the environment can be a bipartisan effort.

"People are willing to come together and Pennsylvania has really shown on a national scale, from climate to water, that Republicans and Democrats can come together," La Rouche said.

On a state level, La Rouche pointed to "Growing Greener III," a bill to ensure access to clean water, open spaces and locally-grown food, as an initiative proposed to help all Pennsylvanians and the state's economy.

O'Mara says such initiatives can help wildlife too, like Pennsylvania's state fish, the brook trout.

"Investments in proactive conservation done at the state level through local partnerships is a way to reduce the risks to these incredible wildlife species and at the same time, reduce regulatory risks for companies that are trying to figure out what they can and can't do," explained O'Mara.

While the political parties are divided on such issues as climate change, O'Mara believes there are ways they can work together to benefit both the environment and the economy.
