Fuerte vínculo entre Salud Bucal y Diabetes

PORTLAND, Ore. – Se van aclarando las conexiones que hay entre la buena salud bucal y los tratamientos para controlar el exceso de azúcar en la sangre.

Noviembre es el Mes de Concientización sobre Diabetes, y una manera en que la gente puede controlar este daño a la salud es visitando al dentista.

La Dra. Lisa Bozzetti es directora dental en el Centro Memorial de Salud Virginia Hillsboro, originalmente fundado para atender a la población migrante de trabajadores agrícolas de Oregon a los condados de Yamhill y de Washington.

Afirma ella que la salud dental y la diabetes no tienen un vínculo casual, sino que están en una calle de dos sentidos – atender a una mejora a la otra.

"Los pacientes que presentan diabetes tienden a presentar una incidencia mucho mayor de enfermedades periodontales. Y hay investigaciones que confirman el hecho de que cuando se tratan estas enfermedades con limpiezas –sean profundas o de simple mantenimiento- tienen el efecto de estabilizar las azucares de la sangre."

Agrega que la enfermedad de las encías es de dos a tres veces más frecuente para pacientes diabéticos.

Alexa Jett, administradora de integración de la salud oral en CareOregon, describe la relación entre los dos como un ciclo en el que los niveles elevados de glucosa en la sangre aumentan la inflamación en todo el cuerpo, y eso provoca inflamación las encías y resistencia a la insulina.

Por eso su organización trabaja para integrar el cuidado dental -que ya tienen cubierto los pacientes de Oregon que tengan el plan Medicaid- al marco de atención primaria.

"La salud bucal es parte del protocolo al tratar la diabetes, igual que seria ver a tu medico para revisarte la glucosa en la sangre, o tu vista, o un pie."

En el Centro de Salud Virginia García Memorial, CareOregon es pionera en trabajar para conectar más profundamente la salud bucal y la atención primaria. Bozzetti dice que el centro está en el proceso de integrar ambos.

"Actualmente vamos incorporando higienistas dentales en algunas clinicas de primer nivel. Una de nuestras ideas es tener un higienista dental en clinicas de atencion primaria con alto porcentaje de pacientes diabeticos."
