Defensores en Olympia Urgen Apoyos para Programas de Desarrollo de la Juventud

OLYMPIA, Wash. -- El Día de la Defensa del Desarrollo Juvenil es hoy (martes) en la capital y sus partidarios dicen que el apoyo fuera del salón de clases les aumenta enormemente las oportunidades a los pequeños en su vida futura.

Los defensores de los programas juveniles y los de fuera de la escuela están hoy en Olympia por el Día de la Defensa del Desarrollo Juvenil. Las organizaciones que después de clases y durante el verano brindan tutoría, manejo de casos y programas de aprendizaje ampliados están dando a conocer a los legisladores la importancia de sus programas para empoderar a la gente joven.

Elizabeth Kohl, Directora de Operaciones en "Housing Hope" o Esperanza de Vivienda, programa de Everett que brinda servicios integrales para familias sin hogar. Comenta que los muchachos con los que trabajan reciben apoyo educativo y tienen un lugar a dónde ir mientras sus padres buscan trabajo y vivienda.

"También es realmente importante que los muchachos hallen relaciones de tutoría que les ayuden a construir la autoconfianza por sí mismos - otra gente, además de sus padres, que les digan que tienen valor, que llegarán a ser algo."

Hoy los grupos en Olympia incluyen a los "Boys and Girls Clubs" del Estado de Washington, de "School's Out Washington", de la Alianza de miembros de la YMCA estatal y más.

Kohl afirma que "Housing Hope" hace énfasis en que sus pequeños vayan a la escuela porque aumenta grandemente sus oportunidades de graduarse. Agrega que los programas de calidad ayudan a que los pequeños comprendan el significado de la academia.

"Luego esos pequeños verán y valorarán la importancia de la educación y entonces verás eso mismo en su compromiso de asistir a la escuela. Y por eso los programas son tan importantes -trabajan de la mano del sistema educativo."

En el estado de Washington más de 180 mil pequeños están inscritos en programas "after-school" al terminar el horario de clases, y más de 330 mil esperan que haya un programa disponible, según reporte de la Alianza para Después de Clases, "Afterschool Alliance".
