SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Los expertos en presupuesto predicen que California enfrentará déficits multi-billonarios en 2022 y más allá, como resultado de la pandemia - y varios grupos piden a los legisladores que protejan la educación superior. Lugares como los colegios comunitarios serán clave para capacitar a la gente y regresarla a trabajar - pero sólo si pueden permanecer en el negocio.

Un reporte reciente de la Fundación "Bill and Melinda Gates" y la Fundación Lumina advierten contra recortes indiscriminados de fondos. Gabriela Gómez, de la Fundación Gates, dice que un presupuesto no debería ser el instrumento contundente.

"Estos recortes, en los que se "cortay quema" parejo, simplemente no funcionan. Y de hecho, lo que termina sucediendo es que hay un retroceso tremendo."

El reporte invita a un enfoque "primero los estudiantes", y funciona como guía para quienes dictan las políticas para apoyar a los estudiantes de bajos ingresos, de color y aprendices adultos que se retiran al perder sus empleos. Eso significa proteger la ayuda finaicera y priorizar los sistemas de educación superior que sirsven a poblaciones vulnerables.

Durante la Gran Recesión, California recortó 1.5 billones de dólares a la educación superior. Las escuelas tuvieron que reducir las clases y subir las cuotas -y como resultado, más de una década después la inscripción sigue baja. Gómez dice que esta vez les irá mejor a los estados.

"No repitamos los errores del pasado. Tomemos lo que aprendimos del pasado y apliquemoslo en este contexto de inmediato."

El reporte también sugiere que los colegios y las universidades dediquen su personal a ayudar a que los estudiantes terminen sus carreras, y promover credenciales de cotra duración en áreas de trabajo que tengan demanda.
