SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Un hombre de San Diego ganó el premio "AARP Andrus Award" - el más alto honor de la organización. Stuart Harvey, de 85 años, Ingeniero Civil retirado, es miembro de la junta fundadora de la clínica gratuita "Volunteers in Medicine" (Voluntarios en Medicina) en El Cajón.

Como parte del premio, la AARP donará mil dólares a la beneficencia que elija Harvey - quien claro que eligió la clínica.

"Los equipos de medicos y enfermeria son todos voluntarios. Los pacientes de hecho no pagan nada. Lo unico que si acaso pagan son las medicinas de patente de la farmacia."

La clínica está en terrenos de la Capilla del Valle, de la Iglesia Metodista Unida del Valle, donde Harvey ha sido voluntario por más de 40 años. La clínica atiende a 3 mil pacientes sin seguro cada año. Harvey recibirá el premio hoy a la 1 de la tarde en una ceremonia virtual transmitida en vivo en las páginas de la organización en "Facebook" y "YouTube".

Nancy McPherson, directora estatal de la AARP, dice que los integrantes de "Voluntarios en Medicina" están haciendo un trabajo crítico para ayudar a que San Diego atraviese por la pandemia.

"Gente como Stuart y el equipo con el que trabaja son los trabajadores de primera linea. Arriesgan sus vidas y su salud cada dia para apoyar la salud de nuestras comunidades. Merecen nuestras "Gracias."

El premio recibe su nombre por la Doctora Ethel Percy Andus, fundadora de la AARP y de la Asociación Nacional de Maestros en Retiro (National Retired Teacher's Association).
