Al comienzo de la pandemia, los cuidadores en el hogar del estado de Washington vieron un aumento en sus salarios con el pago por riesgos. Dos años después, la inflación está borrando ese aumento salarial.

De hecho, los salarios de los cuidadores han aumentado de $19 la hora, en mayo de 2020, a $19.26 en la actualidad, pero la inflación significa que el poder adquisitivo de su salario en realidad ahora es de $17.46.

Gwen Goodfellow es una cuidadora en el hogar.

"Tener el pago por peligrosidad fue realmente agradable. Nos hizo sentir más cómodos para hacer pedidos de comestibles en lugar de ir a la tienda y nos permitió ser un poco mas preventivos," admite Goodfellow. "Y luego, con el paso del tiempo, el costo de las cosas aumento y ya no es una ventaja en este momento."

El sindicato SEIU 775 de Goodfellow fue fundamental en la negociación del pago por riesgos para los cuidadores. Se ofreció un pago adicional por riesgos como trabajadores esenciales que se encontraban en posiciones vulnerables a medida que se propagaba el COVID-19.

Goodfellow cuida de su madre y de una amiga, además de cuidar de su hijo. Ella dice que los cuidadores están luchando.

"Una buena paga para los cuidadores es realmente importante," afirma Goodfellow. "Quiero decir, ayudamos a las personas mayores, ayudamos a las personas con discapacidades. Se que mi situación no es única. Odio decirlo, pero a veces siento que he elegido la pobreza para poder cuidar de mi familia."

Goodfellow agrega que los beneficios más allá del pago también son importantes, como atención médica accesible, jubilación y tiempo libre pagado que no inhiba su capacidad para pagar las facturas.
