Trabajadores de un hogar de ancianos en una instalación del estado de Washington están pidiendo a su empleador que aumente sus salarios con dinero reservado para ese propósito del presupuesto de la Legislatura.

Los miembros del sindicato Servicio Empleados Internacionales Unión realizaron una manifestación informativa el miércoles en el complejo médico Arcadia Medical Resort of Talbot en Renton. El sindicato dice que la facilidad no está utilizando 48 millones de dólares de los legisladores destinados a aumentar los salarios en los hogares de ancianos para este año.

Linda Long es asistente de enfermería certificada en el centro. Ella habló durante el mitin sobre trabajar durante la pandemia.

"Mucha de nuestra gente ha dejado la industria y se ha ido a diferentes ocupaciones porque ¿para que trabajar si no te pueden pagar?," dice Long. "Estas arriesgando tu vida y no te lo están compensando."

La manifestación informativa atrajo a una multitud de trabajadores, así como a la representante estatal Mia Gregerson, demócrata de SeaTac. Las negociaciones están en curso entre los trabajadores y Arcadia Medical Resort of Talbot. La facilidad no devolvió una solicitud de comentarios antes de la fecha límite.

Long dice que el hogar de ancianos a menudo no tiene suficiente personal y la gente está sobrecargada de trabajo, lo que perjudica a los residentes que viven allí.

"Mucha gente vive aquí y necesitan saber que no es su único y último paso en su vida," asegura Long. "Necesitan poder saber que pueden disfrutar cualquier tiempo que les quede."

SEIU 775, el sindicato que representa a los trabajadores, criticó la propuesta de 18 dólares por hora de la facilidad y dijo que está por debajo de un salario digno en el condado de King, donde el costo de vida es alto.
