Group Pushes to Educate Arkansas Voters Ahead of General Elections

As the Nov. 8 midterm election fast approaches, there has been an urgent push for more voter education and candidate engagement in Arkansas.

AARP Arkansas is one group expanding its outreach efforts online, through social media and in-person to let Arkansans know how, when and where to cast their ballots.

Ashley McBride, state director of AARP Arkansas, said the goal is to ensure voters are well-informed about the candidates, and the issues most important to people over age 50 before Election Day. She added an upcoming debate series on PBS stations from Oct. 17-21 should help.

"AARP does not comment on the candidates' answers," McBride pointed out. "However, we do ask that they discuss their positions on issues like Social Security, Medicare, health care, utilities."

Early in-person voting and voting by absentee ballot kick off on Oct 24. Absentee ballots by mail must be received by Nov. 1, and Nov. 7 is the final day for early in-person voting. In the last election, just 56% of the registered voters in Arkansas cast a ballot.

Some 600,000 Arkansas Medicare recipients are set to save money on medication starting this year, with a provision in President Joe Biden's Inflation Reduction Act. It allows Medicare to negotiate some prescription prices with drug companies.

McBride pointed out her organization has a strong history of fighting to strengthen Social Security and prevent cuts to Medicare.

"So, one of the things that they have been fighting specifically to do is lower prescription drug prices," McBride noted. "And that helps to ensure that the prices are affordable for members that are 50-plus, and keep them at a reasonable price."

McBride added a few other issues older Arkansans are watching are candidates' ideas for broadband expansion in the state, especially in underserved and rural communities, plus financial security and long-term care.
