La campaña "Raise Your Guard" anima a los habitantes de Kentucky a ser más activos físicamente, minimizar el estrés, a comer mucha fruta y verdura y practicar otros comportamientos saludables a medida que disminuye la pandemia.

Los datos muestran que los índices de diabetes, obesidad y cardiopatías han aumentado en los últimos años, especialmente entre los residentes negros del estado.

A los 25 años, Harlan Holmes, residente de Bowling Green, descubrió que tenía la presión arterial alta. Dice que el diagnóstico le asustó, y empezó a correr, llegando a entrenarse para un maratón local.

"Nunca fui Atlético," dice Holmes. "En la escuela, no empecé a correr hasta los 20 anos ni a hacer ejercicio. Mi carrera, es más un estilo de vida sedentario, en tecnología de la información."

Kentucky es uno de los cinco estados donde más del 30 por ciento de los residentes declaran estar físicamente inactivos, según datos de 2022 del Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Raise Your Guard es una asociación entre Foundation for a Healthy Kentucky y Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services.

Holmes completa ahora maratones con regularidad y afirma que las carreras de resistencia se han convertido en una forma de vida.

"Hace mucho por mi salud mental y física," asegura Holmes. "Me gusta correr temprano por la mañana porque me demuestra que puedo hacer cosas difíciles, que puedo afrontar cualquier reto."

Ben Chandler, CEO de la Fundación para una Kentucky Saludable, afirma que ahora es el momento de que los residentes tomen medidas para mantenerse sanos y estar en mejores condiciones para combatir el próximo virus, ya sea la gripe o una nueva variante del COVID.

"Tenemos enfermedades crónicas aquí en Kentucky, como diabetes, obesidad, enfermedades cardiovasculares, ese tipo de cosas. Pero en realidad han empeorado como consecuencia de la pandemia", asegura Chandler. "Y creemos que debemos señalarlo y animar a la gente a que haga lo necesario para estar sana."

Otras recomendaciones de "Raise Your Guard" son dejar de fumar o de vaporizar, programar revisiones preventivas y estar al día con las vacunas.
