Credit Unions Gaining Ground Amid Banking Uncertainty

More North Carolinians are considering investing their money in credit unions as the nation's banking system continues to receive scrutiny after several recent high-profile bank failures. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation insures all FDIC-insured bank deposits up to $250,000, but deposits with financial companies that do not have a banking license, also called "non-banks", are not protected or regulated.

Tamara Stanley, regional manager, Self Help Credit Union's Raleigh branch, explained that credit unions are not as risky with their investments compared with other types of financial institutions.

"We managed conservatively," Stanley said. "So, we maintain high cash, liquidity, and then our net worth levels. Our credit union right now currently has over 250 million in total liquidity. "

At a U.S. Treasury Department meeting last week, Secretary of the Treasury Janet Yellen suggested the federal government may consider new rules that would strengthen supervision and regulation on nonbank financial institutions such as the recently collapsed Silicon Valley Bank, which has been called the second-largest bank collapse in U.S. history.

Stanley pointed out that local credit unions are also invested in creating generational wealth and economic opportunity for communities, especially through homeownership programs for first-time homebuyers.

"For homeownership, we go as low as a 580 credit score. And we also loan up to 105% loan to value for those that are first generational," Stanley said.

According to research from George Mason University, the number of banks in the nation continues to shrink, from more than 10,000 in 1900 to slightly more than 4,000 in 2017.
