Después de 18 meses de planificación y renovaciones, el centro de salud comunitario STRIDE ha abierto su segunda farmacia dentro de la clínica de Wheat Ridge, en la calle 29 y Wadsworth (Boulevard). La otra farmacia del proveedor de salud de red de seguridad se encuentra a más de 15 millas de distancia en Aurora.

Su directora, Paula Alexander, afirma que el nuevo local permitirá a más personas obtener medicamentos el mismo día de su visita a precios accesibles.

"Los pacientes de la zona oeste de nuestra área de servicio pueden ahora acceder a la comodidad de una ventanilla única," informa Alexander. "Tendrán acceso a servicios médicos, dentales, farmacéuticos y de salud conductual, todo bajo el mismo techo."

La nueva farmacia ofrece servicios sin cita previa y de autoservicio. Las 19 clínicas de STRIDE atienden a una amplia zona en forma de herradura que rodea la ciudad y el condado de Denver e incluye los condados de Adams, Arapahoe, Douglas, Jefferson, Park y las ciudades de Arvada, Aurora y Lakewood. STRIDE atiende a personas independientemente de su capacidad de pago, y Alexander afirma que el 93% de los pacientes vive al 200% o por debajo del nivel federal de pobreza, unos 60,000 dólares para una familia de cuatro miembros. Tres de cada cuatro farmacia pacientes de STRIDE no tienen seguro médico, y la mayoría paga las recetas de su bolsillo.

"Muchos medicamentos tienen un costo prohibitivo en las farmacias minoristas, incluso para los pacientes que tienen seguro," asegura Alexander. "Así que si no tienes seguro, no tienes acceso a medicamentos vitales."

Alexander afirma que más vale prevenir que curar. Junto con las revisiones periódicas de atención primaria, dice que los medicamentos recetados son fundamentales para controlar enfermedades crónicas como la diabetes, la hipertensión y el colesterol alto, que si no se controlan pueden convertirse en algo mucho peor.

"Pueden llegar a ser potencialmente mortales. Así pues, el cumplimiento de la medicación evita hospitalizaciones y visitas a urgencias, y contribuye a mejorar la calidad de vida," concluye Alexander.
