Annual Report Highlights Need for Better Child Care in AL

Families in Alabama are in critical need of improved child care options, according to the new Kids Count Data Book, released today by the Annie E. Casey Foundation.

The research revealed child care in Alabama is out of reach for some families, which has implications for their own financial stability as well as the state's economy. It showed some adults have to leave jobs or turn them down for lack of child care.

Rhonda Mann, executive director of Voices for Alabama's Children, said it is an area the state knows it needs to transform, but is facing significant worker shortages.

"It comes back to child care workers and if you can't get enough workers, then parents can't have child care and they can't get to work," Mann explained. "Or they are facing instances where child care is just not very stable, not like it used to be."

The average annual cost for child care in Alabama for an infant is about $6,000 year, according to the Economic Policy Institute, which was over 65% of the average cost of rent in 2020. The Kids Count Data Book ranks Alabama 45th overall among the states for child well-being.

Leslie Boissiere, vice president of external affairs for the Annie E. Casey Foundation, said child care is a problem nationwide, citing affordability and low pay for child care professionals as the main causes. She argued a functional child care system should be a national priority.

"The country has never had a child care system that is affordable and accessible to families and also pays a family-sustaining wage to workers," Boissiere pointed out. "It's imperative that we invest in a child care system that can work not only for kids and families, but also for our businesses and the economy."

Boissiere added nationally, infant care is more expensive than in-state college tuition in 34 states.
