In Ohio, more than 1.5 million individuals are providing about $21 billion in unpaid care, according to the latest data from AARP, a more than $4 million increase in unpaid work since 2019.

Holly Holtzen, state director of AARP Ohio, said family caregivers help with medications, medical care, meals, bathing, dressing, chores, finances, and more. She pointed out many caregivers are physically, emotionally, and financially overwhelmed caring for their loved one.

"We know that 58% spend over eleven hours a week providing unpaid labor, 40% spend over 20 hours a week doing so," Holtzen reported. "We're spending about $7,000 annually out of their own pocket on these care-related costs."

Research shows while rural caregivers often have circles of support in close-knit communities, they lack access to health care and social services. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the nation's aging baby boomer population is driving up the need for caregiving, an emerging crisis now considered a public health issue.

Holtzen added several resources for caregivers can be found at AARP.org/caregiving.

"We offer free care guides, information checklists, and an online community that supports all types of family caregivers," Holtzen pointed out.

An AARP survey released this year found 70% of voters said they are likely to support a political candidate who backs proposals to support family caregivers, such as tax credits, paid family leave and respite services.
