Con la industria en crisis, WA aborda problemas de cuidado infantil

El cuidado de los niños es uno de los servicios más caros para las familias de todo el país. Los defensores del bienestar infantil afirman que el estado de Washington se ha posicionado para hacer frente a este problema en el futuro.

La dotación de personal sigue siendo uno de los problemas más difíciles para las guarderías. Ryan Pricco, de Child Care Aware of Washington, dice que en algunos casos extremos, los programas se han enfrentado a decisiones difíciles.

"De hecho, tienen que expulsar a las familias de su programa y dejar de prestarles servicios," dice Pricco, "y esos son algunos escenarios desgarradores que vemos."

Pricco señala que los programas tienen que cumplir estrictas proporciones de personal para garantizar que no están sobrecargados y que todos los niños reciben la atención que necesitan.

El costo promedio nacional del cuidado infantil fue de casi $11,000 dólares en 2022, según un estudio de Child Care Aware of America.

Pricco dice que el gobierno federal respondió durante la pandemia, asignando dinero a los estados para mantener a flote los programas de cuidado infantil.

Los estados tienen que gastar esos fondos antes de septiembre. Pricco dice que muchos estados no han utilizado esos dólares, por lo que el estado de Washington es un caso atípico.

"Ya gastamos ese dinero y ya estamos afrontando su Perdida," asegura Pricco. "Y la forma en que lo hemos hecho ha sido aprobando la ley Fair Start for Kids, aprobando el impuesto sobre plusvalías que mantiene esos servicios para las familias y los cuidadores en el futuro."

Aprobada en 2021, la Ley Fair Start for Kids amplía la elegibilidad para los subsidios de cuidado infantil de Working Connections del estado.

Pricco dice que Child Care Aware of Washington puede ayudar a las personas a solicitar asistencia.

Pricco afirma que el próximo reto para Washington y el resto del país es garantizar que los trabajadores del sector reciban una remuneración adecuada.

"Ahora mismo no lo tenemos y, hasta que no lo consigamos, estas otras inversiones y otras políticas en las que hemos avanzado nunca alcanzaran todo su potencial," concluye Pricco.
