NC Redetermina Medicaid: miles en riesgo de perder la cobertura

Los habitantes de Carolina del Norte enfrentan un desafío significativo ahora que ha vencido la disposición federal que impedía que los estados le retiraran la cobertura de Medicaid a las personas en los primeros tres años de la pandemia. Esto ha puesto a miles de residentes en riesgo de perder su cobertura de salud el próximo año a través de un proceso llamado redeterminación. Rebekah Garcia de Legal Aid of North Carolina espera que 300.000 personas no sean elegibles para Medicaid. También señala que algunas personas pueden perder la cobertura si no responden a las solicitudes de información sobre su elegibilidad.

"Una de nuestras mayores preocupaciones en Legal Aid of North Carolina es que las personas que aún son elegibles sean canceladas simplemente por una razón administrativa", indicó Garcia. "Por lo tanto, al tener una dirección incorrecta con el DSS, no reciben esos avisos."

Para evitar problemas como este, Garcia aconseja a las personas que consulten con su Departamento de Servicios Sociales y se aseguren de que su información de contacto se mantenga actualizada para recibir notificaciones. Ella agrega que es importante tener en cuenta que si pierde la cobertura, hay opciones disponibles. Puede comunicarse con DSS dentro de los 90 días con la información requerida, o aprovechar un período de inscripción especial que está abierto hasta el próximo 24 de mayo e inscribirse en un plan calificado.

Otro problema importante que enfrentan es la posible pérdida de cobertura para muchos niños si los avisos no se interpretan correctamente. García señala que los requisitos de elegibilidad tienen múltiples categorías que pueden calificar a los niños para recibir asistencia, incluso si sus padres no califican.

"Los limites para calificar son muy bajos, alrededor del 45% del nivel federal de pobreza, mientras que los niveles de ingresos para los niños son mucho más altos. Está en alrededor del 211% del nivel federal de pobreza," expresó también la entrevistada.

Garcia dice que entienden que el proceso podría volverse confuso, por lo que Legal Aid of North Carolina, junto con Charlotte Center for Legal Advocacy y Pisgah Legal Services, ha creado NCMedHelp.org, un sitio web que sirve como un recurso vital para los beneficiarios que buscan asesoramiento sobre la elegibilidad a Medicaid y próximos pasos.
