Kentucky sigue enfrentando escasez de mano de obra de salud

Más del 20% de los puestos de enfermería en el Commonwealth siguen vacantes, según la Kentucky Hospital Association (Asociación de Hospitales de Kentucky), y combinado con la escasez de mano de obra en otras profesiones médicas, el estado se enfrenta a una crisis masiva de personal sanitario que podría tener efectos paralizantes. Ben Chandler, de la Fundación para un Kentucky Saludable, dice que la escasez está ejerciendo presión sobre los proveedores existentes con exceso de trabajo y dificultando que los residentes accedan a una atención de calidad.

"Ciertamente estamos viendo escasez de enfermeras, también estamos viendo escasez de médicos de atención primaria. Estos son importantes puntos de entrada al sistema de atención de salud," analizó también Chandler.

El estado necesita al menos 16.000 enfermeras adicionales para satisfacer la demanda para 2024, según datos de Kentucky Healthcare Collaborative.

El senador estatal republicano Stephen Meredith del condado de Grayson será el orador principal en el Foro Bost de la Foundation for a Healthy Kentucky (Fundación para un Kentucky Saludable) la próxima semana en Lexington, destacando los desafíos que enfrenta la comunidad médica y proponiendo posibles soluciones. Añade que el sistema de salud es la columna vertebral de las economías rurales.

"Si el sistema de salud en la zona rural de Kentucky colapsa, entonces será una reacción en cadena. Va a causar una crisis en todo el estado. Es algo que debemos tomar en serio y necesita soluciones ya," indicó además Meredith.

Según la Oficina de Estadísticas Laborales, a nivel nacional se proyectan alrededor de 1.8 millones de puestos vacantes anualmente desde ahora hasta 2032, impulsados por el aumento de la demanda y la necesidad de reemplazar a los trabajadores que han abandonado permanentemente ocupaciones de atención médica.
