Líderes de dos organizaciones sin fines de lucro de California han ganado el Premio AARP Purpose 2024, que distingue a personas mayores de cincuenta años que marcan la diferencia.

El primero es Don Schoendorfer, de Irvine, quien diseñó una silla de ruedas que puede distribuirse fácilmente en países en desarrollo, a través de su organización sin fines de lucro "Free Wheelchair Mission".

La segunda es la Dra. Laura Stachel, obstetra de Berkeley, que fundó We Care Solar, tras una experiencia inquietante durante una investigación médica en África.

"Estaba trabajando en un hospital en el norte de Nigeria en 2008," recuerda Stachel. "Estaba ayudando en una cesárea cuando se fue la luz. Y no lo podía creer. Estábamos tratando de terminar la cirugía donde no había luz en la habitación. Si no hubiéramos tenido una linterna que traje conmigo, no habría habido luz para terminar."

Así que fundó We Care Solar en 2010 para suministrar electricidad solar a los centros de salud materna. Desde entonces, la organización sin fines de lucro ha equipado más de 8,000 clínicas en más de 20 países con maletas equipadas con energía solar y dispositivos médicos.

Stachel dice que cuesta unos $36,000 donar una maleta, enviarla e instalarla, además de capacitar a los trabajadores médicos locales y mantenerla en una clínica durante cinco años.

"La Maleta Solar se instala en una pared del centro de salud y tiene cuatro luces médico-quirúrgicas, un Doppler fetal y un termómetro infrarrojo," subraya Stachel. "Tiene 12 voltios de corriente continua para cargar teléfonos y otros dispositivos. Y permite a los centros de salud trabajar las veinticuatro horas del día, siete días a la semana."

Los ganadores del Premio Purpose reciben una donación de $50,000 para su organización y son elegibles para recibir otros $10,000 a través del AARP Inspire Award. Ese concurso permite al público votar por su ganador favorito del Premio Purpose.
