Many employers are hiring college graduates if they also can show skills-based training, leading one Texas school to expand its Google Career Certificate program.

South Texas College is a recent recipient of the "Innovation of the Year Award" for elevating its online Google certificate classroom. Computer-science professor Nicholas Hinojosa said the award recognizes an effort to offer students up-skilling and re-skilling with what are known as "micro-credentials." He said he believes it's helping with student success.

"I have a couple students that, I know firsthand, they have gotten the certificates," he said, "and it's helped them move up in their positions, their careers."

STC offers Google certificates in voice and data technology, telecommunication specialist training and internet utilization. Since STC adopted the Google "IT Support Professional Certificate" in 2020, Hinojosa said, at least 177 students have received the professional accreditation.

Google bills its certificates as a means of equipping learners with theoretical and practical knowledge, and real-life problem-solving skills. Hinojosa said he believes it enhances student resumes and improves their employability, which can benefit the community where they ultimately live after graduation.

"I think it gives them a better idea of what is to be expected in the workforce, once they decide to pursue any of these areas in the future," he said.

Hinojosa said he believes it's important to get high school students used to earning industry-recognized credentials, especially when they begin planning their futures. He said Google certifications can help, whether students are working toward a degree or launching into the workforce.
