Grants awarded to buy NY electric school buses

Federal funds have been awarded to New York applicants transitioning to electric school buses.

The $69 million grant is part of the Environmental Protection Agency's Clean School Bus Program Grants Competition. This money will be split between the Evans-Brant Central School District in Western New York, and two New York City school bus services.

Deb Peck Kelleher, deputy director of the Alliance for Clean Energy New York, noted despite widespread appeal, misinformation about the buses has spread.

"I think the big one is they aren't going to work in New York; that New York is too cold or New York is too hilly, and we're finding that's not the case," Kelleher pointed out. "Canada and Alaska are successfully using Zev Electric Buses."

Other opposition has come from lawmakers who feel the state is moving too fast. Sen. Joseph Griffo, R-Rome, called for a moratorium on the state's mandate, noting smaller rural school districts might struggle to keep up with it.

Kelleher countered it is not an overnight switch. New York State is mandating only electric school buses be purchased starting in 2027, with a full transition completed by 2035.

Along with federal funds, the state set aside $500 million in the Environmental Bond Act to help school districts make the transition, and guides and roadmaps are available to help. Initial investments in climate programs are often a challenge, but Kelleher argued the benefits outweigh those costs.

"We know that diesel emissions increase the asthma rate in children," Kelleher stressed. "For children sitting on a diesel bus all day, for long rides, over 30 minutes, there's a significant increase in the asthma rate for those children."

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported diesel soot from school buses is associated with reduced lung function and increased incidences of pneumonia in children.
