Ayuda disponible para familias de trabajadores migrantes durante temporada alta de cosecha en OR

Un programa en la garganta del río Columbia ayuda a las familias de trabajadores agrícolas migrantes durante la temporada de cosecha. El grupo Resources Available for Migrant Access to Services o RAMAS está dirigido por la Oregon Child Development Coalition en los condados de Hood River y Wasco. Brinda apoyo por un período de cuatro semanas de temporada alta de cosecha, incluyendo cajas de alimentos para las familias.

Leah Hall, del Columbia Gorge Food Bank en The Dalles, dice que los trabajadores migrantes siguen la cosecha y a menudo traen a sus familias con ellos.

"Proporcionamos cajas de alimentos culturalmente apropiadas y estables, para distribuir a las familias cuando llegan durante este tiempo de transición, y estas distribuciones directas simplemente permiten un uso eficiente del tiempo y los recursos para las familias, y al mismo tiempo reducen parte de la presión sobre nuestros socios de despensas públicas en toda la región," explicó Hall.

La temporada de cosecha en Columbia River Gorge suele ocurrir entre junio y octubre, y la temporada de cerezas durante julio.

Hall agrega que el grupo proporciona más que cajas de comida.

"A través de la coordinación de todos estos socios que trabajan en esta colaboración RAMAS, las comunidades de trabajadores agrícolas migrantes y sus familias reciben educación, nutrición, salud, servicios sociales, salud mental y discapacidades, y servicios educativos de participación familiar," expresó también Hall.

La coordinación desde RAMAS es clave por otra razón. Hall añade que el grupo trabaja con horticultores y propietarios de granjas de la región para determinar cuándo se espera que lleguen los trabajadores.

"Podemos empacar nuestras cajas lo más cerca posible de la fecha de cosecha y entregarlas a quienes las necesitan a medida que llegan", enfatizó además Hall. "Entonces, el momento es realmente sorprendente y eficiente basándose simplemente en la comunicación con todos los que trabajan en este programa."
