Reunión de maestros en la convención nacional en Houston

Maestros y miembros del personal escolar, enfermeras y trabajadores de la salud de todo el país se reunirán en Houston esta semana para la convención nacional de la Federación Estadounidense de Maestros.

Toni Malone es maestra de jardín de infantes en Bastrop ISD, en el centro de Texas, y asiste a la convención por primera vez. Dice que espera aprender de sus homólogos de otros estados.

"Poder conocer profesores de otros lugares y ver, en primer lugar, que no estas solo, pero también obtener ideas sobre cómo otras personas están abordando los problemas de la educación," explicó Malone.

Malone dice que le preocupa la cantidad de maestros veteranos que abandonan la profesión debido a los bajos salarios y el mal equilibrio entre el trabajo y la vida privada. Está previsto que algunos políticos estatales y nacionales hablen en la convención, que se extenderá hasta el miércoles.

Malone dice que los asistentes ya están abogando por las escuelas públicas.

"Necesitamos que los Ted Cruz del mundo esten en el edificio, para que puedan mirarnos a la cara, escuchar nuestras voces y contarnos tambien su version de la historia. ¿Que esta sucediendo? ¿Por qué no defiende la educación pública?" dijo Malone.

AFT también representa al personal de apoyo escolar, desde conductores de autobuses hasta para-educadores, así como al personal de educación superior, trabajadores de la salud y empleados públicos en algunos estados.

Durante su discurso ante la multitud, la presidenta de la AFT, Randi Weingarten, defendió la importancia de la licencia parental remunerada, las clases más pequeñas y hacer que las escuelas sean seguras para los niños.

"Las escuelas públicas son esenciales para el futuro de nuestros hijos y para nuestra democracia. Cada escuela pública debería ser un lugar donde las familias quieran enviar a sus hijos, los educadores quieran trabajar y todos los estudiantes prosperen," dijo Weingarten.
