Voluntarios son vitales para entrega de comidas a residentes mayores de IL

A medida que se acerca el nuevo año, la gente suele hacer propósitos para donar dinero a organizaciones benéficas.

Donar tiempo como voluntario es una opción que el programa de entrega de alimentos Meals on Wheels de Illinois valora mucho. Durante unas horas a la semana, los repartidores llenan bolsas térmicas con comidas nutritivas para ser entregadas. Otras personas ayudan con la preparación en la cocina.

Cheryl Spangler, voluntaria de Northeastern Illinois Meals on Wheels, explica que los beneficiarios de las comidas dependen de esta querida organización.

"Estan muy, muy agradecidos," dice Spangler. "He tenido varios clientes que han comentado que, si no hubiera sido por Meals on Wheels, no habrían sobrevivido."

Entre quienes no pueden consumir comidas saludables con regularidad se encuentran los que están confinados en sus casas, los pacientes operados, o aquellos con discapacidades físicas o mentales.

Durante una visita, un conductor voluntario puede realizar un rápido chequeo de bienestar. Según el sitio web, el año pasado más de 500 voluntarios repartieron más de 100,000 comidas frías y calientes a la semana.

Todos los repartidores deben tener al menos 21 años, tener una licencia de conducir válida, seguro de coche vigente y un historial de conducción limpio.

Spangler es voluntaria desde hace diez años, cuando se jubiló. Le gusta charlar con las personas mayores durante sus repartos porque tienen un "montón de conocimientos".

"Es una excelente manera de contribuir si tienes tiempo," agrega Spangler. "Es una forma estupenda de retribuir a tu comunidad. Es muy gratificante. Sientes una mayor empatía por las dificultades de los demás. Te ayuda a estar agradecido por lo que tenemos y conoces a muchas personas maravillosas."

Según Helpguide-punto-org, el voluntariado puede aumentar las habilidades sociales y relacionales, mejorar la salud física y brinda un sentido de propósito.
