A medida que avanza la segunda semana de la sesión legislativa de Texas, los defensores quieren que las mujeres y las niñas presten atención a los proyectos de ley que podrían afectar sus vidas. El estado ya tiene una de las prohibiciones de aborto más restrictivas del país, y las oficinas de diversidad, equidad e inclusión están prohibidas en los campus universitarios. El PoliChic Engagement Fund enseña a las mujeres sobre el proceso político y cómo obtener la representación que desean. La fundadora Christina Sanders dice que los votantes pueden exigir responsabilidades a los legisladores independientemente de su afiliación partidista.

"Cualquier representante no representa solo a su distrito, es un colectivo. Y la gente todavía tiene que representarte sin importar partido político o afiliación. La parte del compromiso entra en juego en este punto," enfatizó Sanders.

Los legisladores han presentado más de dos mil proyectos de ley. Sanders agrega que los legisladores quieren ser reelegidos, y si su representante no está haciendo lo que usted quiere, puede sacarlos de su cargo.

Los voluntarios de PoliChic crean clubes cívicos en vecindarios de todo el estado que se centran en el registro de votantes, la protección electoral y la educación. En este feriado nacional de MLK Jr., Sanders insiste que las mujeres deben recordar que todo el poder aún reside en manos del pueblo estadounidense.

"La democracia es algo por lo que se lucha. Te levantas y luchas por ello todos los días. Ve a esa reunión del concejo municipal, ve a tu representante. Los legisladores redactan leyes, pero lo hacen basándose en las ideas que se les presentan. Y el hecho de que intereses especiales les traigan leyes y no personas es algo que la gente debería evaluar," argumentó también Sanders.

La sesión legislativa se extenderá hasta el 2 de junio.
